Lance Brown, a Santa Cruz local fine artist and 4th generation metal worker, designs and creates in many mediums. Born and raised in Los Gatos, CA, he’s lived in Santa Cruz County for 30 years. Originally trained and skilled as a contractor, he’s taken his extensive expertise in visioning, designing, and building indoor and outdoor transformational spaces and married it with a fine arts emphasis. He designed and built the labyrinth at the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment (CSE) in San Jose and just completed the labyrinth at the First Congregational Church of San Jose. He looks forward to creating many more in the future.
As a designer, builder and artist, he has created many notable Bay Area pieces ranging from garden labyrinths and interior design (including in home murals) to large and small sculptural works, particularly in copper. Locally, he has worked on the historical preservation (Doctor Miller Building) and renovation of stained glass for St. John’s Church in Capitola with local stained glass artist, Susan Wagner. Each project or commission is unique in scope and scale and Lance has worked on many private residence aesthetic renovations, as well.
An exhibit of Lance’s fine arts photography appeared in Asana Tea in downtown Santa Cruz. His contributions to Asana Tea’s interior include designing an innovative way to exhibit art, as well as contributing to the design process of the lighting design and space planning for the cafe. He recently designed and built the cafe’s unique copper tables. He has also collaborated in designing and building a studio/cottage space with local well known textile artist, Ellen Edith.
He continues to work locally in an ongoing residential renovation and restoration project, with Santa Cruz artist/innovator Michael Leeds.
In the past, as auctioneer, Lance has contributed to the local fundraising efforts for both Hearts for the Arts and Habitat for Humanity.
He has just completed working on an interior transformation/remodel of a living and kitchen area, including lighting design, in Campbell, CA.
A specialty of Lance’s is the design and construction of outdoor labyrinths. He has completed them for San Jose’s Center for Spiritual Enlightenment, the First Congregational Church of San Jose, and is in the process of exploring the possibility of a new labyrinth for another Bay Area church.
Lance is currently available to take commissions for new projects.
He is a one-man operation, as Lance Brown Design, and is open to collaboration.
